A Wednesday morning crash that happened along Highway 78 near Stanford sent 36 children and a school bus driver to two separate hospitals, according to Ephraim McDowell Health.

They said the bus driver and all except for one student were treated and released from hospitals in Stanford and Danville with only minor injuries. The other child was admitted for observation, although his injuries were also minor.

State police say the driver of the bus, 44-year-old Judy Asbery of Hustonville, swerved into the oncoming lane of traffic to avoid hitting another stopped bus. The bus was traveling towards Stanford.

The bus then hit a white truck head on.

The driver of the truck, 36-year-old William Coleman, was flown to UK Hospital. As of Wednesday afternoon, he remained in critical condition.

Lincoln County Superintendent Karen Hatter said all 48 students on the bus attend Lincoln County Middle School.

Of those on the bus involved in the accident, 28 were taken to local hospitals, some by bus, others by ambulance. Eight other students were also taken to the hospital.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation by state police.
