Tractor-Trailer Fire Causes Problems On I-75 In Fayette County

Two lanes of Interstate 75 in Fayette County were temporarily closed Tuesday night after a UPS trailer caught fire, according to firefighters.
Two lanes of northbound Interstate 75 in Fayette County were temporarily closed Tuesday night after a UPS trailer caught fire, according to Lexington firefighters.

Investigators said around mile marker 107, a UPS employee driving a tandem semi, noticed smoke coming from one of the trailers.

Firefighters said the driver pulled over and flames started coming out of the top of the first trailer.

They said the driver detached the truck and second trailer and called the fire department.

Firefighters said they had to cut holes in the trailer to get to the fire.

Investigators said the trailer had UPS cargo in it, including pillows.

Firefighters said the single-digit temperatures caused the water from the fire hoses to freeze almost immediately on the ground, which created a potentially dangerous slick spot on the side of the Interstate.

A state sale truck was called to the scene to treat the road.

Investigators said the UPS driver was not hurt.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
