Three Dozen Goats Killed in Barn Fire

A barn fire in Boyle County kills more than a dozen goats, many of whom were expecting babies.
More than a dozen goats were killed Saturday night in a barn fire in Boyle County, off Whites Road.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but believe it may have been started by a space heater that was running inside the barn.

Donna Slack, who owned the barn was out of town visiting family for the holidays. She says a neighbor called her to tell her about the fire.

All of Slack's goats died in the fire except for a baby goat only a few days old, who was rescued by neighbors.

Slack says all of the adult goats were females and were all pregnant at the time of the fire. She says  about 12 babies including the one save were born a few days earlier.

Slack says she'll have to wait until after the holidays before insurance adjusters can come out, but she estimates she lost about 70- thousand dollars worth of equipment.

She says the money is secondary, since she spent most of the last six years hand-picking the goats and raising them.
