Three people that usually save lives lost theirs Thursday night in Clay County.  After transporting a patient to a London hospital, a medical helicopter crashed across the street from its base.

The helicopter crashed at an elementary school, right where people drop their kids off.  A person who lives nearby says he saw the helicopter circling, then drop to the ground, and go up in flames.

Electricity went out.  That was the cue something was wrong.  Wesley Whitehead heard the helicopter fly over, but when the lights went out his gut told him the helicopter crashed.

He ran to the scene hoping to help.

The pilot was 61-year-old Eddy Sizemore: a Vietnam vet, a retired London Police Officer, and most recently the Laurel County Sheriff's Chief Deputy.  He left three months ago to fly Air Evac helicopters, his true passion.

A National Transportation Safety Board investigator, Shawn Etcher, arrived to the scene Friday afternoon.  He quickly found a damaged tree, which he thinks the helicopter may have hit.

Etcher says medical helicopter crashes don't happen often, but they do happen.  Almost 14 years ago to the day a medical helicopter crashed in Breathitt County flying from Jackson to Lexington.  Four died in the crash.

It will be a while before investigators figure out what happened, and Wesley Whitehead will need even more time.

A preliminary report will be out within 10 days, but determining a cause could take months, or a year.
