A temporary Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter is scheduled to open on December 17, 2013, at 3915 5th Street Road in Corbin, according to shelter officials.

The permanent shelter was recently destroyed by fire.

The temporary shelter is in a building owned by Ralph Rogers, who leased it to KWAS at a reduced rate.

The building has electricity, heat and water.  KWAS is equipping the facility with enough kennels and pet supplies to accommodate 50-dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.

In addition, a small office will be set up to run the shelter.

Supplies to set up the temporary facility were made possible through donations from the community.

Also, the Christian Appalachian Project (CAPS) and PetSmart Charities made generous contributions of supplies.

KWAS continues to accept and receive donations and money from the public.

All the proceeds will help to rebuild the permanent shelter and run the temporary facility, according to shelter officials.

KWAS continues to accept and receive offers of volunteers and foster families.

Anyone who is interested in volunteering or fostering a dog or cat can private message the KWAS Facebook page or call the shelter at 606-526-6925.

Beginning December 17th, KWAS will officially begin taking in strays and abandoned animals (no owner surrenders).

KWAS will continue to take in strays from animal control in the four county service area, which includes Knox, Whitley, Clay and McCreary Counties.

The public hours of operation at the temporary shelter will be:

Hours to view strays to find lost pets:
Tuesday  11-4
Wednesday  11-3
Thursday  11-3
Friday  11-3
Saturday  10-1

Hours to drop off strays or abandoned animals (no owner surrenders):
Tuesday  11-1
Wednesday  11-1
Thursday  11-1
Friday  11-1

Anyone interested in adopting from KWAS should refer to the list of available pets on the organization's Website, www.kwasonline.com and click on "Available Pets."

To see an animal available for adoption at the KWAS temporary shelter, call 606-526-6925 to arrange a time to visit and get to know the animal.

Also, people interested in adopting can go directly to www. Petfinder.com and enter your zip code to see animals at KWAS, local rescues and other nearby shelters.

Any animals at the KWAS temporary shelter not claimed by their owners or adopted, will be placed in rescues or other shelters.

The organizations helping to place these animals include the Lexington Humane Society, Homeward Bound in Lexington, Hope for Animals Rescue Team (HART) in Southeastern Kentucky and Wagging Hearts in Chicago.
