A new study from AAA says more teens across the nation, and here in Kentucky, are waiting longer to get their driver licenses.

Since the recession, many teens say they can't afford a car or the gas to drive it, leading to fewer licensed teen drivers.

The study raises concerns that teenagers who wait longer to get their license may be less-experienced.

In Kentucky, drivers who are younger than 18 must have a permit for 6 months, then an intermediate license for 6 months before they can apply for a full license.

If a teen starts the process of getting a license after they turn 18, they can skip the required 60 hours of driving, their intermediate license, and a driver safety course.

Kentucky State Police say the more experience a driver has in the classroom and behind the wheel, the better.
