Taxpayers Should Be Aware of "IRS" Phone Scams

Around $1 million has been stolen from U.S. taxpayers in what's been called the largest phone scam ever regarding the IRS.
Around $1 million has been stolen from U.S. taxpayers in what's been called the largest phone scam ever regarding the IRS.

The IRS said it will not call or threaten to take anyone's license, put them in jail, or deport anyone for not paying taxes. Any problems with the IRS will result in a paper letter sent in the mail.

Nor will they send any emails asking for payment information from your financial account(s) or credit card(s).

If you feel that you have been targeted by this scam or if your personal information has been stolen or compromised, call the IRS Identity Protection Specialized unit at 1-800-908-4490, or fill out IRS Form 14039 (Identity Theft Affidavit) and report it to the IRS.
