State Police say a suspected shoplifter at a Stanford Wal-Mart on Monday opened fire on a Stanford Police Officer in broad daylight in the store's parking lot.

Police have not released the name of the suspect, but say he pulled out a gun on a Wal-Mart employee who stopped him in the store for allegedly shoplifting. State Police say the suspect left the store after pulling out the weapon.

Investigators say Stanford Police Officer Tim Morris was first on the scene and saw the suspect in the parking lot.

KSP says the suspect spotted Officer Morris and started shooting at his police cruiser.

Police say Officer Morris was able to get out of his vehicle and fire back at the suspect, hitting him multiple times.

The suspect was airlifted to U.K. Hospital.  His condition was still unknown at of 11pm Monday.
