Suicide is the second leading cause of teenage deaths in Kentucky according to researchers at UK who hosted the 5th annual Spread the Love-A-Thon.
High school students made lifelines to their peers Sunday by calling or texting their peers on their cell phones.
The students would then give at least two genuine compliments to the person they called or texted and followed up the conversation with facts about youth mental health.
“It's a really good event because it uses what the kids are already doing. So they're already using their laptops and their tablets, and whatever they're using. So we try to take stuff that they do all the time and make it a little more meaningful,” said Leslie Aslam, organizer of the Spread the Love-A-Thon.
UK Researchers also said one in three Kentucky high school students reports being sad or depressed to the point their daily functioning is impaired.
