Lexington Fire Fighters said 16 people are without a home tonight, after a fire at Red Mile Village.

They said someone was cooking on a 4th floor apartment when it got out of control.

Battalion Chief Jeff Nantz said the sprinkler system kicked in and put out the fire, but it also flooded several apartments.

“The fire itself is pretty cut and dry. It's just there's a lot of damage from the sprinkler system. However, we were more concerned about the fact that there's so many students that live here,” Nantz said.

He said they really glad that the sprinkler system did its job and that they’re facing cleaning up water damage all night instead of people who were injured.

Fire fighters said they were working with the apartment complex to find everyone a safe place to stay during the clean-up process.
