A 300-year-old tree that is a historic landmark in Fayette County is being removed on Friday for safety reasons.

Arborist Dave Leonard evaluated the bur oak for the state and says the tree is hollow and leaning across Spurr Road, posing a potential hazard for motorists. Leonard told the Lexington Herald-Leader the tree, which is 67 inches in diameter, is barely hanging on.

The Transportation Cabinet said an assessment shows the tree's growth has declined for the past 10 years. The cabinet says if part of the tree is stable enough to be moved after being cut, it will donate pieces for educational purposes.

Spurr Road is to be closed in the area from about 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. EST Friday while the tree is removed.
