Somerset Plays Without Teammates Injured In Car Wreck

Two football players were missing from Somerset's game against Danville tonight after being injured in a car accident Thursday night.

Two football players were missing from the Somerset game tonight after being injured in a car accident Thursday night.

Police say Will Hinton, 17, collided with a semi while driving on Highway 80 around 5 p.m. Jacobi Gilmore, 16, was also in the car with him.

Both were airflighted to UK Hospital. According to the hospital, Hinton is now in fair condition and Gilmore is in serious.

Somerset Head Coach Robbie Lucas said he was there when they pulled the boys from the car.

“It was more than horrendous,” Lucas said. “It was probably the most vicious thing I’ve ever seen. The car itself was tough to make out.”

Lucas added that he wasn’t going to give the boys a pre-game speech about “how they need to play for Jacobi or Will tonight” because with as close as their team is he says he hopes they’ve been doing that the entire year.

“In football, as in life,” Lucas says, “you’ve sometimes got to do things that are hard to do. We’re going to come out. We’re going to try to get better. And we’ll go from there.”
