Some Homeless Choose to Sleep Outside

The Catholic Action Center says there are pockets of homeless across Lexington who choose to sleep outside.
A homeless man is still in the hospital after suffering second degree burns from falling into a camp fire early Friday morning.

Ginny Ramsey with the Catholic Action Center says many of Lexington's homeless come to places like the Community Inn for the night rather than sleeping outdoors. However Ramsey says there are those that choose to sleep outside.

Ramsey says many of those sleeping outside have either mental illnesses or substance abuse problems.

Not all homeless living outside sleep in tents or under park benches. Ramsey says many find abandoned houses to stay in.

Lexington Police say it is not illegal to sleep outside. They say they leave most of the homeless alone unless they get a call for a disturbance like trespassing or public intoxication.
