FOP: Shop With Cop Struggling Following Spring Scam

The Bluegrass Fraternal Order of Police say following a scam phone call in the spring, folks are hesitant to donate to the Shop With a Cop Program.
Every year about 200 local kids are able to get Christmas presents thanks to the Bluegrass Fraternal Order of Police's 'Shop with a Cop' program.

This season the FOP is running into trouble when they call folks asking for donations because of one scammer back in the spring.

Local FOP President, Detective Mike Sweeney says while he completely understands people's apprehension, he says there are ways to make sure the person on the phone is legitimate.

He says if you have caller ID, the number will show it's from the FOP office.

Sweeney says they also accept checks and other forms of payment if you don't feel comfortable giving cash.

And while it's been a struggle to raise the funds, Sweeney says that wont stop the program.

The 'Shop with a Cop' will take place at the Meijers on Reynolds Rd. at 8am on Saturday, December 15th.

You can donate to the program up until the day of the shopping.
