Crews in Shelby County were busy cleaning up four crashes that happened within a three mile stretch of I-64 Thursday night. State Police said all of them were caused by a traffic backup behind major construction that closed the interstate between mile markers 28 and 32.

Troopers said the biggest crash happened just before 10 p.m. when a six-vehicle pileup left five people hurt near mile marker 33.

All five were taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Hours later, one person was hurt in another crash while traveling eastbound near mile marker 33.

State Police said this was a one-vehicle crash and the injuries were minor.

Just after 11 p.m., a truck veered off the road and flipped after running into traffic on westbound I-64 near mile marker 34.

The man driving was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Troopers said there were also three dogs riding in a cage when the crash happened. They said they escaped with only a few minor scratches.

Just a mile away, another crash involving two vehicles happened near mile marker 35.

No one was hurt.

According to the Transportation Cabinet’s website, the closures on I-64 in Shelby County should be back open as of Friday morning.
