March 27th is the 24th annual American Diabetes Association alert day, and screenings were held today for those wanting to find out their risk for diabetes.

Free blood glucose screenings and diabetes risk assessments were offered until early this afternoon at Kroger locations on Alexandria Drive and Richmond Road in Lexington and the Kroger in Richmond.

"We have an initiative to try to expand our diabetes educators in Kentucky and reach as many people as possible to provide this education to teach patients what signs and symptoms to look for," said Brooke Hudspeth, pharmacist.

Diabetes strikes nearly 26 million Americans, including 400,000 Kentuckians. A quarter of those affected by diabetes are not aware that they have the disease.
