The Salvation Army of Lexington said it may have to cut some services in 2013 if their donation goal isn't met by the end of the year.
The red kettle campaign, which is held annually--their mascots are the bell-ringers outside of businesses, asking for donations--brings in the majority of the charity organization's funds.
For 2012, the Salvation Army set a goal of $500,000--they still need $180,000.
The money is used for everything from day care services to women's shelters to helping people pay their rent on time, said reps, and the funds are used year-round.
Volunteers said they think there are different reasons less people are giving this year--the economy, for one, and many having only credit cards for another--but they said they don't think it's that people are giving
less.
"One time, somebody gave me a hundred dollar bill camouflaged with a one dollar bill. I didn't quite see it," said bell-ringer Robert Pennington.
