After weeks of putting down salt on the streets, road crews said they’re running out of rock salt.

Scott County Road Maintenance Director J.R. Brandenberg said the shortage is nationwide.

“Finding salt is non-existent. I mean it's a bad situation,” Brandenberg said. “I mean it's widespread.”

Brandenberg said the county has enough salt to do about six more rounds. They’ve made 22 runs already this year.

“It's just been a nerve wracking winter thinking you're not going to get any salt; thinking you're going to run out,” he said.

Brandenberg said if they go through their remaining salt, there are options – like getting emergency salt from the state.

But for a small business owner like Phillip Pratt of Pratt’s Lawn and Landscape Inc., it’s nearly impossible to get more salt.

“We've never, and I've been in this business for 20 years,” Pratt said. “We've never had to face a time when we could not get rock salt.”

Pratt said they clear parking lots and driveways of many businesses in Lexington and Georgetown, and are trying to conserve as much salt as they can.

“What do you do? There just is no good answer at this point and time,” he said.

Rowan County Deputy Judge Executive Jerry Alderman said they were almost completely out of salt this morning. But they were able to get an extra shipment of salt from the state today.

Alderman said road crews are focusing on salting the hills, curves and bridges.

State Highway officials said they used 1,500 tons of salt since Sunday. They now have 12,000 tons left and are still receiving shipments of salt.
