Not too many other rivalries can rival the one between the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville.
“There are so many nasty feelings between these two schools and fan bases that nothing feels better than beating Louisville,” said James Gaunce, a University of Kentucky fan.
Fans came out in their colors Saturday to support their school at the annual Governor’s Cup.
Friends and families wearing blue and red were split at the tailgate before the game. Jimmy Jones parked his bus in the UK parking lot. It is painted red but has University of Kentucky banners on it.
“It's a Louisville bus, my wife is a Kentucky fan, once every two years we let her put the stickers on there,” said Jones.
UK was 1-1 going into the game and Louisville 2-0 but when it came to the Governor's Cup, records didn't necessarily matter, only the winner at the end of the day.
“We really can't stand Louisville so if we can win today, we could lose every game the rest of the season and be thrilled,” said Gaunce about the rivalry between schools.
The Cardinals are carrying their Governor’s Cup trophy back to Louisville this season and Wildcat fans will wait until the rematch during basketball season, the Battle of the Bluegrass.
