Richmond Police said they cited a couple in a child endangerment case after six children were found living in unsafe conditions.

Police said they cited John Barnes, 38, and Amy Barnes, 36, of Windsor Drive in Richmond, for Wanton Endangerment 2nd Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Minor.

Investigators said they were initially called to the couple's home on September 8, 2012, after receiving a report that a small child was trying to shut another small child inside the trunk of a vehicle.

Upon arrival, Police said they checked the trunk, but did not find a child inside.

Police said officers then made contact with the couple and observed that their home was littered with clothes, spilled food, garbage and broken furniture.

Police said there were six children in the home, ranging in age from 4-to-14.

Investigators said crawl spaces were unsecured and that there didn't appear to be adequate bedding or food in the home for the children.

Police said social services responded to the scene and placed the children with a relative of the couple pending further action.

The couple was given a date to appear in court to answer to the charges.
