Rescued Calves Doing OK

Cows caused a portion of highway in Shelby County to shut down just before 9:00 Sunday morning.

The driver of a cattle truck reached for something on his dashboard and drove onto the shoulder of I-64.  When he over-corrected, the load of 88 cattle on board shifted and the truck tipped over.

The driver is OK but 88 calves were on board.  One died and two of the ten calves that escaped are still missing.  They have been spotted in the area and local farmers have been notified.

“There were like ten in one place and 12 in another,” said Robert Green about the cows that were corralled into the median.

The other 85 calves were taken to Blue Grass Stockyards in Lexington.

“They look to be in very good shape, they're laying down, resting eating hay and drinking water so that's as good as you can expect,” said Jay Busby who works at Blue Grass Stockyards.

Blue Grass Stockyards sells and auctions between 2,000 and 3,000 cattle on average a week.  An extra 85 calves wasn’t going to create a problem. 

Teamwork helped all the clean-up on the highway go smoothly and the animals get to the Stockyards safely.

They pretty much knew what we were up against before we ever got there,” said Green.

The calves will stay at Blue Grass Stockyards for at least a few days before continuing their journey west.

“We've got a vet onsite that will look after the welfare of the cattle and of course we're well-trained in that as well,” said Busby.
