Report: Bridge Had Cracks 30 Years Ago

A new report says cracks in Louisville's Sherman Minton Bridge have been around a while.
Louisville's Sherman Minton Bridge had cracks in a weight-bearing beam years ago, but the problem was "improperly classified" by inspectors, according to a report by the Federal Highway Administration.

The bridge was closed in September. Two other bridges in Louisville are now absorbing the heavy traffic that used the Minton bridge daily.

According to the Courier-Journal, the FHA report says cracks in welded areas were found 30 years ago and should have been deemed "critical," but weren't. The newspaper says those cracks weren't enough to warrant closing the bridge, but they should have prompted more inspections or other actions.
