Everybody remembers 9-11.

"We were just in complete shock," said Joseph Shipley.

Shipley was in the Coast Guard, watching the news.  He witnessed the second plane hit.

"My commanding officer came down thinking it was a movie, and he picked up the remote, and started hitting the stop button, and it didn't stop," said Shipley.

The Coast Guard deployed him to New York almost immediately after the attack.  Shipley spent weeks in the rubble.  He says the horrible things he saw at ground zero changed him forever.

"I took for granted a lot of things that we had, and that's something I'll never do again," said Shipley.

He says he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and severe depression.  Shipley shared his story at a Memorial service at Eastern Kentucky University.  He spoke at almost the exact time when, 12 years ago, the second plane hit.  It's not a story he tells often.

"A lot of friends and coworkers know that I was there, I don't talk about it.  As you've seen today during my speech I was very emotional.  I get very emotional when I think about it.  I just, I don't do it," said Shipley.

9-11-painful to remember, impossible to forget.
