Rand Paul Backs Path To Citizenship

Senator Rand Paul, a Tea Party favorite, says he supports a "path to citizenship" for illegal immigrants.
U.S. Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, a Republican with Tea Party backing, said Tuesday that he supports a "path to citizenship" for illegal immigrants.

Paul, speaking to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Washington D.C., Paul said it's not practical to deport America's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. He said it makes more sense to give them a way to eventually become citizens. But he said there are conditions on that citizenship.

"The first part of my plan, border security, must be certified by the Border Patrol and an investigator general and then a little different from the bipartisan plan," Paul said Tuesday. "Some may object to this, but if we don't I don't think we'll get conservatives on board, which I think we need to get everybody on board that this is good for the country. I call this plan 'Trust But Verify.'"
