Race-Day Horse Drug Banned

Race-Day Horse Drug Banned

In a 7-5 vote, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commision passes the proposal to ban Furosemide.
By a vote of 7-5, the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission approved a limited ban on the anti-bleeding drug, Lasix, on race-days in the state's top races, including the Kentucky Derby.
The proposal will no undergo legislative review.

The proposed ban would go into effect January 1, 2014.
Some critics say this ban would kill horse racing in Kentucky.
Racing commission chairman Robert Beck thinks the opposite would happen...that the ban would attract fans who have stayed away from the sport because of the perception of doping horses.

If approved, Kentucky would be the first state to take action against the drug, which is banned internationally
