Quiet End to 2011, Arctic Beginning to 2012

New Year's Eve will be partly sunny, mild and dry, a little uncharacteristic of what has become the record wettest year in Lexington history.  New Year's Eve night will be fairly quiet with dry weather and a light breeze, but New Year's Day will be a time of major transition as an aggressive cold front drives temperatures downward during the second half of the day, through the 40s and 30s.  Limited moisture with the front may only be enough to spark some scattered rain showers that may end as snow flurries or snow showers in eastern Kentucky.  A few flurries may linger into Monday, when highs will struggle to reach 30 degrees.  Tuesday and Wednesday mornings will be very cold with lows in the teens.  A stray flurry or two may occur in eastern Kentucky on Thursday.  By the end of the week, temperatures will rise back closer to - and eventually above average.
