A project to widen a section of Newtown Pike (KY 922) in Fayette County to five lanes in anticipation of the new Bluegrass Community and Technical College campus has been awarded by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The $3 million project involves widening Newtown Pike from West Fourth Street to West Loudon Avenue to improve safety, operations and access for the new campus scheduled to open this fall at the old Eastern State Hospital property.

Preliminary work, such as erosion control and removal of a historic fence, began February 20, 2013.

The contract, which has a completion date of December 15, 2013, was awarded to Bluegrass Contracting Corp. for $3,022,078.
