While most people buy a lottery ticket hoping to hit the jackpot, some of the money the Kentucky Lottery makes on ticket sales also goes to education.

UK Senior Sherita Vernon said she has never bought a lottery ticket, but she has been given $3,000 from the Kentucky Lottery because of the KEES program.

“A lot of people just see it as a gambling problem or they're just hoping to get lucky,” Vernon said. “But they're helping us to get lucky by getting extra money and helping somebody to further our education and chase after our dreams.”

Carl Rollins, Kentucky Higher Education CEO and Executive Director, said the Kentucky Lottery gives out around $200 million to the need based and merit based scholarships every year.

Three million dollars also goes to literacy projects.
