A man is dead after two shootings in two different counties.

The Scott County Sheriff's Department says a man shot a woman five times at the BP off the Athens exit of I-75 in Fayette County around 8:30 this morning.

Deputies say the suspect then jumped into a car and started driving north when Lexington police and the Fayette County Sheriff's department took off after him.

They say he didn't stop when they tried to pull him over, so Scott County deputies laid spike strips on the highway ahead of him.

When the man's car ran over the spikes near exit 129, two of his tires went flat and his car went into the ditch.

Officials say when the man got out of the car, he pointed a handgun at the Scott County deputies which prompted one of them to shoot him resulting in his death.

The deputy who the department says shot and killed the suspect is on paid leave which is normal in these types of situations.

The woman who was shot at the gas station was taken to UK hospital.
