Police Investigating a Deadly Shooting on Lima Drive

Lexington Police said someone shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon in a parking lot on Lima Drive, just off Georgetown Street.

Lexington Police said someone shot and killed a man Sunday afternoon in a parking lot on Lima Drive, just off Georgetown Street.

Police said they got a call about ten to 12 gun shots being fired just after two o’clock Sunday afternoon.

They said when they arrived, they searched the area and couldn’t find anything until someone flagged them down and told them a man had been shot and that he was still inside a car.

“Just surprising to hear that,” said Jim Chambers who was chipping ice out of a nearby driveway when he said he heard eight gun shots. “Hard to believe someone got shot.”

Lexington Police said at least a dozen gun shots were fired in the parking lot.  Police said they found a driver with multiple gunshot wounds.  He was taken to UK Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Police said a SUV in the parking lot also had bullet holes and that they found at least ten shell casings.

Police believe the car crashed into a snow bank and said they have conflicting reports of a possible passenger who might have gotten out and ran.

The Mobile Crime Lab, Forensics Unit and Robbery/Homicide Units all spent hours collecting evidence.

“As with any investigation when we have a shooting we have officers in the area canvassing seeing if anyone has heard anything, seen anything,” said Lt. Eddie Hart with the Lexington Police Department.

Lexington Police said they believe multiple suspects ran off and said according to store owners, there were several people in the parking lot when shots were fired.

Police said with the victim dead, they are hoping witnesses come forward with information.

“We're looking for the other side, either the shooters or witnesses and so it's very crucial that the eye witnesses come forward and tell us what they saw,” said Hart.

Police have not released where or how many times the victim was shot.

They said several nearby businesses have surveillance cameras and that police are checking video for clues.
