A Frankfort home nearly became a death scene when police say an armed robber broke in early Friday morning.

Laurel Cartwright, 23, said her dog, Kanien, sprang into action once the suspect kicked in the door on Polsgrove Street around 3 a.m.

"He ran in to attack the person...and he shot my dog four times," said Cartwright.

She said the robber then held Cartwright at gunpoint, took all of her money, and ran off.

The owner called police...then rushed the 7-year-old pit bull to a 24-hour veterinary clinic.

He had two bullets in his head--one in his neck, the other in his sinus cavity.

But, amazingly, vets said Kanien would live.

"Without my dog being here, who knows what would've happened," said Cartwright.

As of this writing, Frankfort police are still looking for the suspect. They describe him as a white male with a thin build, around 6 feet tall and 170 pounds, who was wearing a black hoodie with white writing on the front.

Cops are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the suspect's capture.

As for Kanien, his vet bills were mounting quickly.

Cartwright said she already owed $700, and needed to pay more--her dog needed more vet appointments to follow up, as well as antibiotics and other medications.

To help pay for the pit bull's health visits, she set up a fund at the Commonwealth Credit Union in Frankfort.

If you'd like to make a contribution, you can go to any of the credit union's locations and ask to deposit into the 'Laurel C. Cartwright' account.
