Georgetown Police said a Dairy Queen robbery was an inside job. Today, they arrested two 18-year-old employees, Chase Lane and Davin Edwards, charging them with theft.

Captain Robert Swanigan said the Dairy Queen was robbed early Sunday morning.

“It was actually a staged theft that had taken place,” Swanigan said. “The two employees had actually worked together to execute the theft.”

Swanigan said Lane was closing the store Saturday night. He then opened the backdoor and let Edwards inside. They said Edwards was wearing a sweatshirt and sunglasses and was armed with a BB pistol.

Police said the two men then went to the safe and Lane filled the bags Edwards provided. Once Edwards left the store, Lane called police to report the store was robbed.

Swanigan said the men stole $3,400 and split it between themselves.

He said the detectives did an outstanding job with this case because at first they had about zero chance of identifying the robber.

But Swanigan said another piece of evidence – outdoor surveillance video from the surrounding stores – showed the car the suspect used. Police then tracked that vehicle to Edwards.

“Pretty bad for them. Both of these guys are 18-years-old and just starting their lives,” Swanigan said. “And they've made such a poor decision. The citizens of Georgetown think we have an armed robber on the loose, and then to learn it's all been an act... it's frustrating.”

This is the fourth time the Georgetown Dairy Queen has been robbed within a year.

Police said they are investigating to see if the crimes are connected.
