Drunk Driving is an issue across the county, even more so on holidays like New Year's

Kentucky State Police and police departments all over Central Kentucky out in force during the holiday in an effort to catch people who got behind the wheel after having a few too many.

Overnight, State Police set up DUI checkpoints setup all over the Commonwealth. Troopers slowed down vehicles, checked license plates, driver's licenses and made sure people weren't driving drunk.

Officials at KSP Post 7 in Eichmond say they arrested 15 people overnight. That added to multiple arrests in the Madison County area by the sheriff's department, Richmond Police and other law enforcement agencies in the area.

One person was even arrested while ABC 36 crews were at the checkpoint. Police say that man was very intoxicated and had an open beer can and an open liquor bottle inside his car.

State Police officials say they will be cracking down heavily on DUIs this year. They also suggest you download the "Drive Sober KY" app on your smartphone. The app has many features, including an easy way to find a cab or other methods to get home if you've been drinking.

You can find app and more information on the State Police's No DUI Kentucky website.
