A Perry County miner died working on equipment at a surface mine in eastern Kentucky.

The Kentucky Office of Mine Safety and Licensing says 52-year-old Jerry Watts died Saturday morning.

The Slemp native was working at the Begley Number One Mine at Short Creek in Leslie County.

They say Watts was welding a dozer blade liner when the jack and liner slipped hitting Watts in the head.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

This is the first mining-related accident in Kentucky in 2013.
