Panel Looks At Raising KY Cigarette Tax

There's talk of raising Kentucky's cigarette tax by 40 cents, taking it to $1 per pack.
There's talk of raising Kentucky's cigarette tax by 40 cents, taking it to $1 per pack.

That hasn't happened yet.

And some wanted the tax hike to be even bigger.

The recommendation is from a panel created by the Governor to simplify the tax code.

The panel says a cigarette tax hike would mean $120 million a year in new taxes.

Lieutenant Governor Jerry Abramson chairs the commission and says there was support to go way beyond a 40 cent increase.

"The argument was not should we raise it 60 cents. The argument was should we raise it $2, $3..$4 because of the concern for the health of our citizens, and because of the concern of keeping kids from starting to smoke," says Abramson.

He says the Commission settled on 40 cents.

Abramson says the decision was made because of concerns that if it was any higher, people would drive to other states to buy cigarettes.
