This cold weather is overcrowding emergency shelters in Fayette County so the Red Cross is opening another one.
Lexington shelters are packed, all over-capacity, with people trying to stay warm.
The Red Cross is opening a new shelter on Georgetown Street at the Community Action Council’s West End Center to help people survive these bitter cold next few days.
“By helping our community and those who are out there in these rough temperatures that are just freezing and cold,” said
“So we want to make sure we help out the other emergency shelters who are at full-capacity to be able to help our brothers and sisters who are in situations right now where it’s down to just survival to be warm.”
The shelter opened Friday night and will stay open 24-hours until 7:30 Monday morning when workers will re-evaluate the cold and the need to keep it open longer.
