Online Dating Safety: Who Are You Talking To?

Notre Dame football star Manti Te’o is the innocent victim of an online hoax or an accomplice involving a dead girlfriend who never existed the case has recently raised the awareness of online scams and internet safety.

According to “Connected Nation” some online surveys show 1-in-10 profiles are really people who don't exist.

Connected Nation, a partner with the Kentucky Attorney General’s Cybercrimes Unit, says half of the people who are on the Internet have reported being scammed or affected by spyware.

Lexington Police say reported scams, like the one involving Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te’o also happen here.

Jessica Ditto, an Internet Safety Expert, gives tips for people who are interested in online dating.

  • Google the names of the people you are interested in online.
  • Use dating websites that require a credit card.
  • When meeting the person for the first time, do it in a group setting.
