Every thoroughbred celebrates its birthday on January 1st. Today, the ‘Old Friends’ Retirement Farm in Georgetown is celebrating an expansion.

‘Old Friends’ President Michael Blowen said there is an overwhelming demand for placement of retired thoroughbreds.

“At the end of the day a lot of these horses end up going to the slaughter house,” Blowen said.”

In the past 10 years, Blowen said the farm grew to be home to 120 horses. Now he’s looking to add another 80 horses to the farm.

He said they are planning on turning 40 acres of property next to the farm into the fields for the new farms.

Adding so many horses to the farm is a bigger financial burden on the farm though.

“Everyday the donations beat the bills, I feel like I won a photo finish at Keeneland,” Blowen said.
