Kaitlyn Palumbo doesn’t need a ponytail or curly hair to be her true self. In fact, she said she didn’t even show her true colors until she went bald.

Kaitlyn donated her hair to children with cancer when she was seven-years-old. Just a couple months later, Kaitlyn started to lose her own hair, but this time it wasn’t by choice.

“We found her first bald spot right up on the top of her head and I thought that's kinda weird because it's perfectly circular,” Jennifer Palumbo, Kaitlyn’s mom said.

Dermatologists told Kaitlyn she had alopecia, which they said comes from an overly aggressive immune system.

Kaitlyn said her hair would grow back, only to fall out again the next year in late autumn.

In September 2012, Jennifer became very concerned that a spot had already appeared on Kaitlyn’s hea. This was much earlier than normal.

“It was just one small spot, but it just kept coming out and out,” Kaitlyn said.

Eventually, Kaitlyn was left with just one small ponytail and after some time and convincing, Jennifer agreed to shave off the little hair Kaitlyn had left.

Jennifer said, “You think 'Oh she's going to go to prom and she won't have any hair, she won't get to do the salon thing, and what about her wedding day?’”

Kaitlyn played around wearing wigs, but decided they covered up her true self. She went to her Mom and said she didn’t wanted to wear them anymore.

“I felt like I was hiding who I really was and felt like people should know who I am,” Kaitlyn said.

This Sunday, Kaitlyn is hosting her own hair donation event called “Kaitlyn’s Kourage.” All of the hair collected will go to “Children with Hair Loss,” which is an organization that donates wigs to children in the United States who can’t afford it.
