Lightning hit a radio communications tower at Nicholasville Fire Department Station Number Two on Main Street Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials.

No one in the fire station was hurt.

Fire officials said in addition to damaging the radio tower, three televisions in the fire station were damaged.  Some of the TV's started giving off smoke after the lightning strike, but never caught fire.  Firefighters simply removed them from the station house.

Fire officials said they immediately went to a backup communications system after the lightning hit, so they didn't lose contact with emergency dispatchers.

Fire officials also said the 9-1-1 emergency dispatch operation had to go on backup power as the thunderstorms moved through.

Fire officials said there was never a time citizens couldn't reach 9-1-1 or the fire department.

Fire officials said there were eight lightning strike reports within a 45-minute period as storms moved through Thursday afternoon.

Fire officials said no fires were reported with any of the strikes.

Sporadic power outages were reported across Nicholasville and Jessamine County.
