New Weather Warnings To Highlight Storm Impacts

The National Weather Service is now using impact statements to describe potential effects of dangerous storms.
The National Weather Service offices in Louisville and Jackson, which issue tornado warnings for most of the state, have begun adding extra information into warnings. This additional information is called an impact statement.

Impact statements are added to a tornado warning to describe if a tornado is confirmed to be on the ground or if the warning was issued as a result of rotation seen on radar. The statements can also differentiate between a tornado which could cause substantial or catastrophic damage.

These levels of damage can help meteorologists focus on the most powerful storms during a severe weather outbreak in a region.

The impacts can also heighten the urgency to the public to take shelter.
