Understanding The New Fayette County Fireworks Law

A new law bans most fireworks in Lexington, forcing Fayette County families across county borders to buy their fireworks.
Last September, a new law in Fayette County banned most fireworks in Lexington.

Generally, the new law bans fireworks that go up or blow up.

If caught with illegal fireworks in Lexington, people can be fined between $250 and $1,000.

Anyone caught selling illegal fireworks can be fined $2,000 and could get up to 6 months in jail.

The new law is leaving dozens of parking lots and street corners without a fireworks vendor this year. Last year, Fayette County collected $21,000 in permit fees from those vendors.

Police ask anyone that has a noise complaint due to fireworks to call their non-emergency number. That number is 859-258-3600.

The only time 911 should be called is if a firework or sparkler causes a fire, property damage, or an injury.
