A social media network designed to help you get to know people who live in your neighborhood is taking off in Lexington.

13 Lexington neighborhoods have started using the site Nextdoor, which allows residents to create private websites for their neighborhoods to share information.

Stacy Smith said between 60 and 70 households in Willow Oak in Lexington are using Nextdoor. They use the website as a tool to keep neighbors informed of crime, post minutes from the neighborhood homeowner’s association, and ask questions.

Smith said connecting with her neighbors online has brought them closer together.

“There's something about seeing the constant posts, that makes me feel more inclined to participate,” Smith said. “And then it's the participation that makes me feel more connected. So I have friends now in the neighborhood instead of just acquaintances.”

Rebecca Craft-Carlos and Holly Chatting also live in the Willow Oak community.

“I think we feel more connected,” Craft said. “Simply because if you're outside walking, you might comment to someone about something they've posted.”

“It just puts you on alert to watch for cars that you don't normally see that don't look very familiar or something else out of the ordinary,” Chatting said.
