Neighborhood Upset About Plans For Property

A Lexington neighborhood is upset about plans for a property.
"There's drugs here.  There's prostitution.  There's a whole spectrum of things and to drop this many people right down in the middle of a residential neighborhood, I think is just a recipe for disaster," says Charles Payne.

Payne is upset after the Bluegrass Area Development District announced it's plans for 1393 Trent Boulevard.

"We've purchased the land to use as part of a housing component of our employment program.  The goal of the program is to stabilize their housing, help them work through their issues that they've had, in order to make sure that they become productive tax-paying citizens," explains Bluegrass Area Development District Executive Director Lenny Stoltz.

Stoltz says while the program is still in the beginning stages, he says it would aim to help men who've gone through the child support court in Fayette County and they would have to meet certain requirements as well as be involved in a faith-based organization.  But some homeowners here worry that this would create more problems for the neighborhood.

"Our streets turn into a playground in the summertime.  We've got kids running up and down the streets everywhere.  I'm concerned for their safety.  Not to mention, our property values continuing to slide," comments Payne.

However, Stoltz believes it would actually help the area, "I'm very confident that this property being occupied and put to a productive use will cause it to no longer be a place that criminal activity can go on."

In response, homeowners here have formed the River Park Neighborhood Association to try to address the issue.

"If we can't stop it, then to participate, to have as great a role in participation as we possibly can," explains Payne.

The program is expected to be up and running by the end of the year.  If you live in the area and want more information on the River Park Neighborhood Association, just go to http://riverparkassociation.wordpress.com/ .
