A national veterans group made a historic move Sunday afternoon.  For the first time ever, the National Association of Black Veterans held its annual luncheon in Lexington.

When veterans aren’t getting the benefits they deserve, NABVETS helps to assist veterans and their families.

The national organization started in 1969 as the Interested Veterans of the Central City by seven Vietnam combat veterans in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  It reorganized in 1973 to become NABVETS and addresses issues concerning black and other minority veterans.

The first chapter in Kentucky started five years ago in Louisville with 12 members.  The third chapter in the state started in 2013 in Lexington.

“It's awesome,” said Shedrick Jones Sr., Region VI Commander for NABVETS.   “In 2008 when we got our chapter in Louisville, I had no idea it would grow to this, this quick.”

Sunday afternoon they celebrated NABVETS members who exhibited leadership throughout the year at their annual luncheon, held in Lexington for the first time.
