Mt. Vernon Families Want Better Water

For years, Rockcastle County residents have complained about bad water. Mount Vernon city officials are working to solve the problem.
Families living in Mt. Vernon claim they have put up with water that has a bad smell and taste for more than ten years, and they aren't going to give up their fight for better water.

Mt. Vernon Mayor Mike Bryant admits there is sometimes a smell or bad taste to the city water, but assures everyone it is safe to drink. The odor and taste is believed to be caused by the more than 5,000 species of algae in Lake Linville, the source of the city's water.

The city began treating the water with a new chemical last August, improving the quality of the water, but city officials say the lake's water can be difficult to treat during the transitioning weather in spring and fall.

Mayor Bryant insists the city will continue to work on the problem. Until the problem is solved during every season of the year, some residents will continue to spend more money on bottled water.
