McDowell Elementary School Flooded

Heavy rain caused flash flooding in Floyd County Monday night, closing the school district.
Heavy rain caused flash flooding across Floyd County in eastern Kentucky Monday night, closing the school system.

While most schools were closed Tuesday due to bad driving conditions in the county, McDowell Elementary School took in 4 inches of water.

Teachers, staff, and volunteers spent Tuesday cleaning out the mud left from the flood waters and sanitizing the school's furniture and supplies.

The school has flooded multiple times since its construction.

Floyd County recorded more than 2.5 inches of rain in the Monday afternoon through Tuesday morning.

While Floyd County schools will open again Wednesday, school officials say McDowell will stay closed until the campus is clean.

Principal Rady Martin hopes to have all 300 students back and learning inside the elementary school by the end of the week.
