Lexington police are trying to figure out exactly what happened after a man showed up at the University of Kentucky Hospital Emergency Room with a gunshot wound.

According to police officials, the victim told officers that he was walking near Trent Boulevard and Appian Way around 1 a.m. when another man approached him.

The victim said that the man asked him for money and then a cigarette. When the victim refused, he said the man pulled out a gun and shot him in the leg.

The victim was driven to UK Hospital by a friend.

Police officials said that when officers checked the area for a crime scene, they couldn’t find any evidence of a shooting.

The gunshot wound is non-life threatening, police said.

Police are investigating.
