Man Severely Burned After Falling Into Campfire

A man suffered severe burns all over his body after he fell into a campfire at a homeless camp Friday morning, officials said.
A man was severely burned after he fell into a camp fire Friday morning, officials said.

Police and fire crews got the call around midnight for a report of a homeless man that had fallen into the fire in the wooded area behind the Farmer’s Feed Mill on West Loudon, according to fire department officials.

When first responders arrived they had trouble pinpointing the location of the injured man and had to search the woods before they were able to find him.

He was taken to UK Hospital with severe burns to his head, upper body and lower legs, police and fire officials said.

Fire officials took a moment to remind people that Lexington offers numerous shelters for the homeless.

"We wish guys would just take comfort in the shelters that are available to them instead of trying to make [these] shelters and set up these little camps,” said Major Phillip Buettner.

Another man, who police said was also homeless, was taken to the hospital from the camp. According to fire officials, the man was suffering from hypothermia.
