A motorcycle rider is dead after a crash Thursday night on Race and Third streets in Lexington.

Police say a Chevy Impala turned in front of the motorcycle as both went through a green light.

Police say the motorcycle rider's lack of a helmet was key.

Lexington Police Lt. Chris Van Brackel says, "His injuries are primarily to his head, which having a helmet on would have made a huge difference here. This is not a high speed collision. The speed limit here is only 35, and it looks like his injuries came from his head hitting the pavement, after he was hit by the car, not actually hitting the car. So a helmet would have made a huge difference in this case."

The victim's name has not been released.
